One of my favourite things to do in any new city is to visit
the local markets as they give you such a colourful perspective of local culture. This was definitely worth the 4:30am wake up.

Ubud, which is about an hour from the airport and near the centre of the island, is fast becoming the ideal place re-boot your health and well-being. Despite all of the development and tourism, Ubud is still a very peaceful place and is surrounded by rice fields and lush tropical vegetation. There are lots of yoga classes, meditation retreats, raw/organic cafes, cooking classes, endless Balinese massages and some great shopping for clothes, jewellery, and home goods.

Baskets full of Sulphur |
Woke up at 1am this morning to then hike vertically for 1.5 hours while non stop laughing to reach the peak.... to where we the stumbled down the volcano in the pitch black while barely breathing as there is so much sulphur in the air. The sky then lights up with flashes of electric blue sulphur flames.Amazing I've never scene anything like it!!! The sun rises as we climb back to the top , where you can see the beautiful turquoise coloured acid crater lake. The lake is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation, in which sulfur-laden baskets are carried by hand from the crater floor. The work is low-paid and very onerous. Makes me extremely grateful for what I have.

Indonesia is humongous, there are up to 17,000 islands. After spending a month in Indo I only covered Bali, Nusa lembongan and Yogyakarta.
In comparison to Southeast Asia I found Bali to be quite expensive for my backpacker's budget. If you don't ride a scooter (which I unfortunately didn't) then you will easily spend half your daily budget on transportation. Most Warungs (local restaurants) are reasonably priced but if you go to any health cafe which I couldn't resist then you'll be paying triple the price. Daily tours are also really expensive so you definitely need to barter. I found Bali to be very westernised with ritzy resorts, boutique shops and trendy bars. It's more of a couples destination or for a group of friends who want to spend a lavish weekend outside of Australia.
I spent most of my time In Seminyak, where I practiced my Bikram yoga. Seminyak has some of the best trendy cafés which was a nice break from the local cuisine. As I'm a vegetarian and a coeliac I was always stuck eating Nasi Goreng (fried rice) and I'm telling you there's only so much rice one person can eat. I lived off tempeh and the health food cafés. In saying that the variety of tempeh dishes were amazing.
I'd definitely go back to explore the many islands of Indonesia but Bali is to similar to home for me.
My highlights:
· Dreamland Beach, South Bali
· Caves in Gunung Kawi Temple, Ubud
· Tegalalan rice fields, Ubud
· Fun Dive at Coral Bay in Lembongan Dive Center, Nusa Lembongan
· Seeing some magical blue flames at Ijen Volcano,Yogyakarta
· Sunrise at Mt Bromo Volcano, Yogyakarta
